Creating a Triptych

I had taken a series of similar images and wanted to use three of them to form a triptych. I was quickly able to find out how to do it, using this video at Adobe TV.


Procedure

Open the three images in Photoshop; they will each have their own tab. Drag and drop two of the images onto the third image. They will now form a single image, in three layers.

Hold shift key and using the move tool, slide one image to the left, and one image to the right, until they 'click' into place (although they will be out of view at this time).

Image menu - - - > reveal all. This will show all three images next to each other. You can then adjust the spacing between each image so they aren't touching, then reveal all again.

Using the crop tool, make the canvas larger on all four sides to create a transparent 'border'.

Layer menu - - - > new. Select this layer and fill it with a colour of your choice. This creates a solid border around and between the triptych.

Layer menu - - - > flatten image.

Lining Up a Series of Images

If you have multiple shots of the same scene that were handheld so not exactly lined up, you can use Photoshop to easily align them for you. This does require cropping however, so the more megapixels your camera has, the better depending on what you plan to do with the resulting images.

Procedure

To get your images into Photoshop layers, open Bridge, select the images you want and go to Tools>Photoshop>Load into Photoshop Layers.

Choose Edit > Auto-Align Layers and select Auto as the alignment option. If Auto does not create good registration of your layers, try the Reposition option.

Use the crop tool to crop all the layers at once.

Now, go to File>Scripts>Export Layers to files.
