My Response
As always, I was apprehensive about receiving the feedback for my assignment, but also excited to see whether my forays into street photography had been the right call for this exercise. It turns out the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with my work on the exercises, extra reading and research and my own imagination coming together to produce an assignment that really hit the mark.
There is obviously much in the way of pleasing
comments in the report. To be honest I take all comments positive or
negative in the same way, in that I use the information to either
acknowledge I'm on the right track, or to make improvements in my work.
Either way it is making me a better photographer, artist and visual
thinker. With that being said, a exceptionally positive report such as
this one is great as a morale booster.
The
colour-concepts and narrative elements were generally strong in all the
images, so my tutor's critique was mainly focused on the technical
aspects of my images such as composition, exposure, post-production etc.
The suggestion to use a wide-angle lens for street-photography is an
interesting one. I do own a 10-20mm wide-angle lens, which I've used on
previous assignments. For this assignment I use exclusively my 18-55mm
'kit' lens as I wanted to travel light and stay portable, but also have
some flexibility to reach for images without getting in people's faces.
The rationale for using a wide-angle makes sense, and is an idea i'll
experiment with on my next street shoot.
I'm
pleased that my tutor considers this a 'progressive' assignment for me.
My choice of genre did take me into a world with which I had little
previous experience, but as well as giving me great scope to play with
narrative it has also introduced me to a new favourite photography style
which I've enjoyed researching and working with.
